The Pivoting Musician

Dr. Garrett Hope and Dr. Heidi Kay Begay are coaches who guide the modern-day musician through a successful pivot. If you are a post-graduate music student or a professional who’s at their breaking point and wants more out of their career, then you are in the right spot! We talk about what a pivot is, the necessary steps to pivoting, and life post-pivot! Say “yes” to yourself and become your own music boss.

The 5 Pillars

We believe there are five pillars that support a healthy and successful career pivot. These pillars form the basis of The Pivoting Musician.

Pillar 1: Pivot

A successful pivot starts with recognizing the journey that brought you to where you are. It’s also about seeing the talent stack, experience, and knowledge that makes you unique. A successful pivot is about seeing new opportunities and shifting your focus just a few degrees. It doesn’t have to be about a 180º career change, or throwing out all the effort you’ve put into becoming the musician you are.

Pillar 2: Collaborate

A successful pivot requires a team. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals that can walk alongside you, help you refine your ideas, and call B.S. on your Inner Critic, Upper Limit, or Impostor Syndrome. It’s also about networking well. There are no Lone Rangers at The Pivoting Musician.

Pillar 3: Create

A successful pivot is about serving an audience well. Seeing what it is they need, want, and desire, and then creating something that satisfies. Often, musicians have blinders on so they can’t see the endless possibilities of how their talent stack, experience, and knowledge can serve an audience. It’s not just about writing, performing, and recording music—though it could be.

Pillar 4: Market

A successful pivot is about letting the world know about your creations. Marketing is telling the world a story about who you serve, why you serve them, and how you make their lives better. It’s not about pushing, it’s about pulling. Those who have pivoted well learn to communicate with their audiences and draw them into the story.

Pillar 5: Enroll

Lastly, a successful pivot is about enrolling people into your creations. Nothing happens until something is sold. We go to school and learn how to make music at a high level, but we don’t receive training on the mindset around money, valuing our services and products, pricing our offerings, and making sales.
